Dear Jessica,

You ask a very basic life question. The answer is simple and difficult at the same time. The simple part: You pay attention to what God asks of you day by day as you move toward the time that you could indeed become a missionary. The difficult part: You try to listen rather than control!

What do I mean by that? You accept evidence and signs that come to you affirming this choice. They might be things like this: I'm good with foreign languages. I'm able to be flexible. I have strong faith.  You also notice when things happen that might be signs that you are being called in another direction: You don't think of this call for a whole month at a time. You think of obstacles, such as a fear of hardships or an unwillingness to do without hot water or a desire to be very comfortable or a new interest in becoming a computer programmer.

All of this is supposed to happen to assist you in "discerning" or sorting out God's messages to you (and they are plentiful). Be patient. God doesn't tell you your life's work in a day. Be prayerful. God speaks in that silence. Be generous. God will give back what you need.
